Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Kennels

What size dog kennel do I need?

Your dog should be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably inside the kennel. As a general guide, measure your dog's length from nose to tail and add around 30cm to find the minimum internal length. For larger breeds, we recommend our full-height kennels which offer more headroom and space.

Are your dog kennels suitable for outdoor use in the UK?

Yes. All our dog kennels are constructed from pressure-treated timber and feature weatherproof roofing felt or shingles, making them suitable for year-round outdoor use in the UK. The raised floor design helps prevent damp from the ground, keeping your dog dry and comfortable even during wet British winters.

What is a full-height dog kennel?

A full-height dog kennel is a larger kennel design where the interior height is sufficient for a person to stand upright, making it easier to clean and maintain. These are ideal for large or giant breeds and for owners who want easy access to the kennel interior.

What wood is used in your dog kennels?

Our dog kennels are constructed from pressure-treated timber, which is treated to resist rot, decay, and insect damage. This makes them far more durable than untreated wood and suitable for permanent outdoor installation in the UK climate.

Do dog kennels need a base or foundation?

We recommend placing your dog kennel on a solid, level surface such as paving slabs, a concrete base, or a pressure-treated timber frame. This improves stability, prevents the floor from rotting, and helps keep the interior dry. Avoid placing directly on grass or soil where possible.

Can I insulate a dog kennel for winter use?

Yes. Adding insulation panels to the walls, floor, and roof of your dog kennel will significantly improve warmth during colder months. You can also add a door flap to retain heat and reduce draughts. For dogs that spend extended periods outdoors in winter, we recommend our larger, full-height kennel models which are easier to insulate effectively.

How do I maintain a wooden dog kennel?

To extend the life of your dog kennel, we recommend applying a pet-safe wood treatment or preservative every 1–2 years. Clean the interior regularly, check the roof felt for any damage after storms, and ensure the kennel is positioned to avoid standing water. Our pressure-treated kennels require minimal maintenance compared to untreated timber alternatives.
